The Real Mary-Sue Test

The original definition of Mary-sue has been bent and twisted over time. The Mary-sue tests are no longer accurate to what the real definition is. Don’t believe me? Think about it like this, most Mary-sue tests contradict themselves. Some people say a balanced character is a character with nothing bad in their past, and nothing special about them. But wait, how does that make sense? That is the most boring character I have ever heard of. If all characters were like that, they would all be the same and none would be unique. Another definition of a balanced character would be someone who is not perfect but has nothing major happen to them. That right there is a contradiction to itself. If you aren’t pefect, something terrible will happen to you at least once, but if something happens to your character in their past, they are all of a sudden a Mary-sue? No not at all.

Now I will explain to you the true definition of a Mary-sue. A mary-sue is not based on your characters looks, their family, their past, or their friends, but the character as a whole. If they have a lot of friends but a bad past, they have some sort of balance there. And adding points to the character in a Mary-sue test for their friends or how many people like them in an intimate way is wrong. It is only right if it is your other characters that are their friends that mean you like your character so much your character is loved by your other characters. But you have no control over other people’s oc’s. So what is the real definition of a Mary-sue? The real definition is this: A character that is flawless and perfect with special unexplainable powers (Or they don’t do much to sway other people to like them or agree with them). That is the true definition of a Mary-sue. Ask Ketchum is a maey-sue (Gary-stue/marty-stue for the males). He is flawless. He has no scars from any of the times he has been injured. He also has a way of changing everyone’s opinions to match his.

What will I do differently in this test compared to the others you may ask? Well I will add points for good thing in your characters life. I will take points off for bad things. A character can never have too many flaws. Think of reality, there are no perfect people, but there are very flawed people. The points may be adjusted as more people take the test to I can make it more accurate. Also I absolutely despise when other tests have the same question worded differently just so they can make you have more points. I will be doing opposite questions to add or take points, but I will not be repeating the same question. So, let’s get to the test, sorry for making you wait so long.

For each question, put an x or / in each box if it is true, to your character. The o’s in the boxes are fillers until you put your x’s or /’s in.

Looks:
[o]1. Your character has a hairstyle that isn’t physically possible in your anime/manga.
[o]2. Your characters skin is flawless and has no birthmarks, scars, ect. (Tattoos don’t count)
[o]3. Your character has curves/abs that everyone of the same gender wants.
[o]4. Your characters eye color is a color not possible to their anime/manga.
[o]5. Your characters blood is a color not possible to their anime/manga.
Friends/Family:
[o]1. Your character has both parents and they are happily married and love their kid.
[o]2. Your characters parents don’t care what there child does no matter how bad it is.
[o]3. Your character is loved by 5 or more of your own characters.
[o]4. Your character has had many bodyfriends/girlfriends of your own characters.
Background:
[o]1. Your character has never had a life-changing event.
[o]2. Your character has had a life-changing event, but they were the only one to live through it, or they saved other characters even though they were a very young age.
Personality:
[o]1. your character is afraid of nothing.
[o]2. your character has had a life changing event such as a death in the family, or someone close to them, but they don’t care, and they never cry over it.
[o]3. your character never get’s angry.
[o]4. your character can never be tricked by anyone.
[o]5. How your character acts on the outside is how they actually feel on the inside (All the time not just sometimes)
Abilities:
[o]1. your character has abilities that only a specific family has, but they are not from that family.
[o]2. your character can snap their fingers and fix something, change something, or clean something up.
[o]3. your character can change another characters species without being that species themselves.
[o]4. your character has the ability to change another person’s thoughts, mood, or change their mind completely.
[o]5. your character can do something that isn’t physically possible (Example: they can get something wet that can’t physically be wet/they can set inflammable things on fire.)
[o]6. your character has abilities, but they can’t explain why.

Final score: _________
For every x or /, add a point, and for ever o still in the box, take away a point.

Here are your results:
1-5- your character has a lot of flaws. Like I said before, you can never have too many flaws. Your character is good and most definitely not a Mary-sue.
6-9-your character has a good balance of flaws and good things about them. They are a good balanced character.
10-12-your character may be pushing it a bit. If 11 is half of the test, you may need to add some flaws to your character. But if don’t want to there is no need to, it is more like a just in case thing.
13-22-your character sadly is a Mary-sue and may be slightly irritating to others. But that does not mean they are bad or should be deleted. Your character just needs more flaws about them.
I have wanted to do this for a while, but never got around to it until recently. so if you have questions about any of it, please feel free to ask. also you may tell me questions you want me to add. and I would love it if whoever uses this posts theirs in a journal or a deviation and links it to me. but don't forget to credit me for it. Also, if you thinks the points are off or need to be changed or have any suggestions for it, feel free to tell me what you think should be changed!
